Case study four - Morrow Communications

Each of our case studies has been provided by enterprises across Northern Ireland who have been successful in winning public sector tenders. Their experience and advice may be helpful for you to learn how to access public sector opportunities.

Morrow Communications

Morrow Communications is a highly experienced, team-based, integrated communications consultancy based in Holywood, Co Down. Established in 1985, we are a multi-service agency providing strategic communications advice to a diverse range of public, private and third sector clients and currently employ 24 professionals.

We specialise in Public Relations, Strategic Marketing, Public Affairs, Event Management, Audio-Visual Production and Design, Print Management, Advertising and Media Planning and Buying. Our client portfolio includes a range of annual public sector contracts including InterTradeIreland, OFMDFM, Invest Northern Ireland and project based clients including Craigavon Borough Council, Derry City Council, DOE and Queen’s University.

Searching for new opportunities

Keeping up to date and checking for new tender opportunities on the eTendersNI portal on a regular basis is really important, don’t just wait for an email notification to come through as this applies to invitation only tenders.

For companies new to the portal, it is necessary to navigate around and get to know the system, especially when it comes to submitting a tender, as requirements and format for the upload can vary from project to project.

Before deciding to write a tender, we take time to assess the opportunity and evaluate if we have the resources and availability to deliver, and if the project is financially viable for the budget available.

Asking the buyer clarification questions

When working through the tender specification we take time to interpret the brief and submit clarification questions within the deadline for queries particularly if we are unsure how to answer a section.

We also ensure that our response answers all the questions on the terms of reference and allocate enough time to firstly write the document, proof read and check the figures.

Learning from experience

Our track record in winning public sector tenders comes from years of experience, and whilst we have an extensive catalogue of previous tenders on file, each new business tender needs to be extensively researched, written from scratch and tailored to the requirements of the client.

Business development is a core value of Morrow Communications and as such all staff have a responsibility to be aware of new market trends and opportunities, therefore tenders are rotated amongst the team based on their specialisms.

Meet the Buyer events

Through our event management contract with InterTradeIreland, Morrows have organised and managed numerous Meet the Buyer events which provide an opportunity for SMEs to meet face to face with buyers from public sector organisations such as CPD, Translink and HSC. These events are extremely valuable for SMES to learn about tender opportunities, build new skills and understand the market.

If organisations have the opportunity to attend similar events, we thoroughly recommend taking the time to participate, as the events provide valuable information to help organisations tailor future tender applications.
