Continued success for DVA Digital Systems at UK IT Industry Awards

At this year’s UK IT Industry Awards two of the DVA nominees - The Compliance and the Commercial Licensing Systems were highly commended in their respective categories.

The UK IT Industry Awards are the largest and most well-known event in the technology industry calendar. The awards take in a broad spectrum of nominees from the private and public sector and are held in high esteem within the IT industry, they have been called “the Oscars of the IT Sector”.

At this year’s UK IT Industry Awards two of the DVA nominees - The Compliance and the Commercial Licensing Systems were highly commended in their respective categories.

DVA received awards for the new Compliance and Commercial Licensing (CLS) systems. These are the latest of the DVA Digital Transformation projects to be recognised UK-wide, as the Driving Examiner Digital Solution (DEDS) won the Workplace of the Year award in 2018 and the Driver Licensing System (DLS) won the Digital Transformation Project of the Year award in 2020.

Compliance - Best User Engagement Project of the Year

For the user engagement project there were nine projects shortlisted including a number of multi-national companies. The Compliance app which has been developed using state of the art android tablets has completely transformed the work carried out by DVA enforcement staff at the roadside.

Improved targeting of offenders and accurate recording of roadside encounters is achieving DVA’s vision of safer drivers, safer vehicles in a practical way – there is incentive for non-compliant operators to improve their operations as they know DVA now has the technology to apprehend offenders more successfully. The technology is future-proofed to allow enhancement for services such as automatic number-plate recognition and body cameras. Importantly, the app’s introduction continues to make monetary savings to the public purse.

Mark Wilson, Product Owner for the Compliance project said:

"Implementing a new IT system for DVA has been an interesting and enjoyable challenge, and it’s great to have the hard work of staff acknowledged by the IT industry at a national level.”

Commercial Licensing System - Best Public Sector Project of the Year

The Commercial Licensing System was entered into the Best Public Sector IT Project category. CLS’s vision was to produce an online system which would enable DVA to transform the licensing and regulation services to the taxi and bus sector.

CLS went live on 7th September 2020 with many challenges, including the requirement to maintain COVID guidelines (staff isolating, socially distancing arrangements in place), retirement of the former Senior Responsible Officer (SRO), ongoing implementation of Ministerial Exemption Licences, along with changes to a range of internal and external operational processes previously in place implemented to ensure business continuity.

Without doubt, the success of the project has been due to prolonged and effective communication between many stakeholders before and after go-live. Most importantly, the project depended on project team and operational staff willingness to go way beyond that extra mile and the success of this project has been dependent on their commitment to see it successfully implemented. Also a special word of recognition for our former SRO Heather Douglas, who played a pivotal role in leading the planning and development of a system that has met our vision and goals, transforming how we interact with the bus and taxi industry across Northern Ireland.
