Learn about how suppliers are transforming lives through Buy Social NI

If you are interested in competing for an NI public sector contract, you need to know about the Buy Social NI scheme.

What is Buy Social NI?

Buy Social NI ensures that government contracts support the achievement of wider government objectives.

The three primary Programme for Government outcomes that Buy Social can have a direct impact on are:

  • We have a more equal society
  • We have more people working in better jobs
  • We care for others and we help those in need

What does this mean in practice?

In many contracts this means the contractor is expected to carry out targeted recruitment and training for staff, during the contract duration.

They may be expected to recruit 'New Entrant Trainees' - people who have no recent or substantial work experience (such as school or college leavers) or people who are long-term unemployed.

Some contracts also make specific provision for people with disabilities, looked after children, or for people with an offending background.

Buy Social successes

Over the last three years, Buy Social has led to more than 340 people securing full-time employment.

The Head of the Civil Service, David Sterling recently took part in a short film to promote the scheme - which introduces some individuals who have been benefited from the scheme.
