  • Fresh Start to partnership with the US

    Date published: 1 November 2016

Finance Minister Máirtín Ó Muilleoir is undertaking a series of engagements in San Francisco and New York this week to highlight the political and economic progress since the Fresh Start Agreement and to encourage US investment in “a shared and prosperous future”.

The Minister will address business and Irish American audiences in California and meet with public finance and government representatives including Mayor Bates of Berkeley, State Representatives Senator Loni Hancock and Assemblyman Kevin Mullin, San Francisco Treasurer Jose Cisneros and California State Controller, Betty Yee.

The Minister said: “We enjoy a unique and strong relationship with the United States. I will urge Irish America to initiate its own Fresh Start in transatlantic relations in order to cement the peace with jobs and investment. Irish American support has been key to the success of the peace process but now is the perfect time to move our famed partnership up a gear.

“With just 6.6 million people on the island of Ireland, but 40 million in the Irish and Scots-Irish diaspora in the U.S, the power of our global family remains our ace card.

“I, along with my Executive colleagues will continue to forge new relationships and explore all funding and investment opportunities to deliver prosperity for our people.”

Later in the week, the Minister will meet with New York state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli and Members of the Irish Caucus in New York City Council.
