Schools design challenge

The original idea of reducing the size of bins is one of those ideas which is common among local government officials. We recognised that this idea was a solution to a problem rather than a problem to be solved and, instead, posed the question: how do we redesign the landfill bin in a way which encourages recycling?

We partnered with a local organisation which promotes STEM activities within three schools in Northern Ireland to run a design challenge to redesign the landfill bin to encourage recycling. The pupils went through a full product design process starting with user insights, technical drawings, and 3D printed prototypes of their designs.

The designs were presented at a final event, judged by a panel of experts and the winner won a prize. The report details the process, design brief, and final designs presented by the students.
