  • Engagement key to delivering positive transformation: Ó Muilleoir

    Date published: 31 May 2016

Finance Minister Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has said he is committed to engaging at the highest level and on the ground to secure the best outcome for all our people.

The Minister was speaking after a telephone conference with the Scottish Finance Minister, Derek Mackay, followed by visits to Newry Chamber of Commerce and the Newry and Mourne Enterprise Agency.

Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said: “I had a valuable conversation today with Scotland’s Finance Minister and we spoke about the wider issues facing our regions, especially in how we deal with the Government in London."

Speaking after his visit to Newry, the Minister added: “I do not underestimate the contribution made by local businesses to developing, growing and rebalancing our economy. As Finance Minister, I want to do what I can to ensure they are supported to thrive.

“I believe it is vitally important for the Executive to engage on the ground to inform the decisions we take and the direction we are moving. This has been a very productive meeting, where I heard about the challenges facing businesses in Newry.

“The border region has been on the periphery of two economies, it’s my contention that by developing an all-island economy we can put the border region at the centre of that economy.”

The Minister met with Michael McKeown, President of Newry Chamber and Liam Quinn from the Newry and Mourne Enterprise Agency.
