Child Rights Impact Assessments (CRIAs) are tools used by governments, organisations, and institutions to evaluate how proposed laws, policies, programs, or decisions may affect the rights and well-being of children.

They are rooted in the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and aim to ensure that children's interests are explicitly considered in decision-making processes. They help identify both positive and negative impacts, allowing stakeholders to mitigate risks, enhance benefits, and uphold their obligations to protect and promote children's rights.

The Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People (NICCY) provides extensive guidance on this important area of work, which is available at the link below.
