Public service pensions in payment and deferred pensions, are reviewed in April each year to take account of changes in the cost of living. The Department undertakes this review with reference to the September to September change in the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) in the previous 12 months. Where a positive change in CPI has occurred the Department is required under Article 69 of the Social Security Pensions (Northern Ireland) Order 1975 to make a Statutory Rule to implement the change. The order is used by each of the public service pension schemes to uprate pensions in payment and deferred pensions according to the percentage specified.
