Long Term Sustainable Future for the Mourne Mountains
Date published:
Following the recovery from the severe wildfires that occurred in the Mourne Mountains in 2021, the Department of Finance commissioned research to identify key issues in relation to the area’s long-term sustainable future.
The James Hutton Institute carried out research to engage with local residents, community groups and businesses in the area. This research report, completed in 2023, sets out the key findings and recommendations from the work.
After the research was carried out, the Forever Mournes Partnership was established to bring together key stakeholders to enhance cooperation, build resilience and protect the landscape in the Mournes. This partnership includes the National Trust, Mourne Heritage Trust, NI Water, NI Environment Agency, the Forest Service and Newry, Mourne & Down District Council. The James Hutton Institute research was shared with key stakeholders and other departments to help inform their work in this area.
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) Minister has now announced the creation of a cross-departmental Mournes Strategic Group to ensure coordination on Mournes issues. Further details on this group can be found directly from DAERA.
