Consultation on amendments to The Building (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2022

Summary

The Department of Finance carried out a public consultation from 14 August to 9 October 2020 on proposed amendments to The Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 (as amended) and associated guidance in Technical Booklets.

The amendments reference the latest Indicative Atlas of Radon maps and introduce a new fire safety requirement that in effect ‘bans’ the use of combustible materials in the external walls and specified attachments of certain high-rise buildings.

The Department’s response to the consultation incorporating a summary of the consultation responses can be accessed below. These have informed the Building (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2022 and the Department’s new Amendments Technical Booklet AMD 7.

Consultation description

This consultation seeks your views on proposals to amend the local Building Regulations and associated technical guidance booklets to:

  • introduce a new regulation that effectively bans the use of combustible materials on the external walls of 'relevant buildings' and introduce guidance in relation to 'Assessments in lieu of tests'; and
  • make reference to a revised Atlas Map that will be used to establish if a dwelling is located in a radon affected area.
