What to expect if you are retiring from the Northern Ireland Civil Service and are affected by the 2015 Remedy (McCloud)

Members retiring after 30 September 2023

If you're retiring after 30 September 2023, and you're affected by 2015 Remedy (McCloud), you'll soon receive a retirement quotation with two options. Your retirement quotation will provide information of your Deferred Choice Underpin (DCU), this will include figures for both your Legacy (Classic, Classic Plus, Premium and Nuvos) and Reformed (alpha) benefits for the Remedy Period. The Remedy Period is 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2022.

These quotes are to ensure that you can make an informed choice on the retirement benefits you would like to receive for the Remedy Period. Based on the information provided, you will need to complete the Remedy DCU Option Form by selecting Option A or Option B. This will need to be returned to us as soon as possible.

Please note we cannot arrange to pay your pension benefits until we have received all your completed forms, including your Remedy DCU Option Form.

Exceptions

If you are retiring on Final Retirement (FR) from 1 October 2023 onwards but took Partial Retirement (PR) during the period 1 April 2015 to 30 September 2023 and claimed benefits relating to the remedy period (1 April 2015 to 31 March 2022) at PR, you will not receive a DCU option but will receive an Immediate Choice (IC) for your PR. The decision you make at IC will also be applied to your FR. Retirement options for IC will be issued by March 2025 at the latest.

We understand that you may not want to delay putting your Final Retirement pension benefits into payment, so we can arrange to pay your benefits based as they currently stand in the interim until we are ready to provide you with your Immediate Choice remedy calculations and documentation. We will then adjust your pension benefits to reflect the choice you make and will pay any arrears due to you.

Not all members will be affected. You can find out if you are in scope for the 2015 Remedy (McCloud) and what to expect next by using the Am I affected? tool
